Warning! This post contains adult content!

Despite the immediate sexual connotations, the word ‘pornography’ doesn’t just mean explicit sex. Violence can be pornographic. However, in the case of Erotic Nights of the Living Dead, pornography means exactly what you think it means. Except there is also violence. And zombies.

Erotic Nights of the Living Dead 1

Relax, in Erotic Nights of the Living Dead, the zombies just do the biting.

Needless to say, this has nothing to do with Night of the Living Dead or Dawn of the Dead, but it can be assured that those films saw an explosion of rip-offs and fake sequels in Italy, and though this import borrows much from zombie godfather George Romero, it has other things on its mind. The plot is fairly immaterial, but the setup does bear mentioning; a wealthy land developer purchases an abandoned island and heads out there with his new socialite girlfriend and a hired sailor to discover that this prospective vacation destination is occupied by a creepy old man and his sexy granddaughter. What they don’t immediately realize is that this man is a witch doctor who raises the dead on the island. Oh, and everyone likes having sex. A lot.

In essence, there isn’t much to expect from Erotic Nights of the Living Dead other than some occasional sweet zombie kills and a whole lot of people boning. This cannot be understated. Every scene has a setup in which two or more characters engage in some form of sexual contact, including fondling, threesomes, showering, cunnilingus, fellatio, fingering, masturbation, visible climax, and the most creative uncorking of a champagne bottle you’ve ever seen. Hopefully you won’t mind women (or men) who refuse to shave their naughty bits, because each ‘performer’ here adheres to a hirsute ‘70s mentality when it comes to pubic and ‘stache upkeep.

Erotic Nights of the Living Dead 2

The people in Erotic Nights of the Living Dead spend more than half the film’s run time on gratuitous scenes like this.

Betwixt this non-stop barrage of people just dying to get laid, there are a few moments when some semblance of a plot creeps in, particularly when some of the main characters encounter zombies without knowing what they are yet. These scenes involve bludgeoning with a small anchor, headshots, decapitation, immolation, biting, scraping, and emasculation. Well, it’s not as though you shouldn’t expect the last one.

So, it’s impossible not to mention that Erotic Nights of the Living Dead isn’t a good movie. The acting is terrible, the camerawork is uninspired, and a lot of sequences extend way longer than they need to, but is it just possible that this movie is slightly elevated above its status as crappy zombie porn?

Without trending into Armond White territory, an argument could be made that the land developer occupies a higher class, the socialite occupies a lower class, and the sailor is properly fixed in his position between the two, accepting work ferrying his charges between the city and an undeveloped land. The amazing thing is that the characterizations aren’t simply artifice; each character is adequately played into their stereotype throughout, with the land developer’s non-stop paid trysts and constant identification as a man who believes his money and status elevate him above all else, the socialite’s vacillation between her paid suitor and the interests of pure lust, and the sailor’s natural desires overpowering logical decision-making while nevertheless remaining true to himself. Indeed, the grandfather and his charge both zero in on the sailor as a man of character who understands his place in society. Yes, Erotic Nights of the Living Dead is just hemorrhaging references to Hesse’s Siddhartha.

Erotic Nights of the Living Dead

Despite the film’s uneven tone, there are some legitimately creepy moments toward the end.

Of course you must remember that these people are all heathens, engaging in sex with anyone willing at any point in the film. As the title suggests, Erotic Nights of the Living Dead’s milieu is mixing gore with sex. With so much time taken up by both of those requirements, you can almost forgive the makers for the tatters of a coherent plot. It bears mentioning that the final third of the film features an extended resurrection sequence that belies the sexual content and actually manages to be fairly creepy due to appropriate makeup and some haunting death shrouds.

And if you’re not satisfied with the plot as-is, an interesting reversal in the end has you wondering whether the protagonists went insane, if one character might have been a ghost, or if any of the events really happened.

Erotic Nights of the Living Dead

Remember how I said the zombies did the biting? That’s gonna require more than a bandaid…

Those looking for a good zombie film will be disappointed. Those looking for a good porno will find it hopelessly outdated. Those desiring of a transgressive aesthetic willing to try anything to titillate will find a rock solid foundation in Erotic Nights of the Living Dead, but if you go looking for it, make sure you pick up the explicit uncut version on DVD. If you’re willing to take the plunge, you might as well go all the way.
